Why this race matters
Alaska's August 18 top-four open primary set up a ranked-choice general election. Former U.S. Representative Mary Peltola (D) actually led incumbent Dan Sullivan (R) in the primary, an ominous sign for the two-term Republican. Peltola, the first Alaska Native in Congress, is the only Democrat to win statewide in Alaska since 2008; Senator Lisa Murkowski has endorsed Sullivan.
