How does the state demographics quiz work?

Accepted Answer

Each run has 10 mixed rounds. 6 rounds show a mystery state's stats (population, poverty rate, median household income, voter turnout, etc.) — with each stat's rank out of 51 — and you pick which state it is. The other 4 rounds ask "which state ranks highest/lowest?" on one metric.

Which statistics are used in the quiz?

Every run can draw from: population (2022), poverty rate, median household income, population change (2017–2022), voter turnout (2024 vep), ballots per electoral vote (2024), real unemployment (u-6, 2024), tax burden (state + local). All 50 states plus the District of Columbia are in the answer pool.

Where does the quiz data come from?

Accepted Answer

Population, median household income, population change, and poverty rate are from the U.S. Census ACS 5-year (2022). Real unemployment is BLS U-6 (2024 annual average). Voter turnout uses the U.S. Elections Project's voting-eligible population (VEP) figures. Tax burden is the Tax Foundation's CY2022 state + local burden. Ballots per electoral vote is derived from this site's 2024 state totals divided by current electoral-vote apportionment.

How often is the quiz data updated?

Accepted Answer

Whenever the underlying sources publish new figures. ACS is refreshed annually (5-year vintage), BLS U-6 is updated after each annual state release, and the 2024 turnout / ballots-per-EV figures update as state results are finalized.
